Indian lakes

 

Wular Lake.

 

Sambhar Lake Located in the arid zone of Rajasthan, is one of the largest inland saline lakes in India. It made Rajasthan, the third largest salt producing state in India.

 

Deepor Beel This is a permanent freshwater lake, in a former channel of the Brahmaputra river, south-west of Guwahati city.

 

The Hussain Sagar Lake This is one of the largest man-made lakes in Asia, located in the heart of Hyderabad.

 

Himayat Sagar is an artificial lake about 20 km from Hyderabad in Telangana

 

The Tso Morari Lake This is one of the largest in the Ladakh region and is almost like an inland sea. Situated at an elevation of about 4,900m.

 

Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim, some 40 kilometres from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season.

 

One of the most spectacular lakes in Ladakh is the Pangong Tso, which lies across the Changla

Pass from Leh. At an altitude of almost 4,500 metres.

 

Maharana Pratap Sagar (also known as Pong Dam Reservoir) is a reservoir named in the honour of the patriot Maharana Pratap. It is located Himachal Pradesh.

 

Pandoh Lake is situated in Mandi district. This lake has been targeted at the generation of hydroelectric generation. The lake diverts the water from River Beas and pours it into the River Satluj.

 

Gobind Sagar is a man-made reservoir situated in, Himachal Pradesh. The reservoir on the Sutlej, has been created by the huge hydel dam at Bhakra and has been named in honour of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru. One of the world's highest gravity dams, the Bhakra dam rises nearly 225.5 m above its lowest foundations.

 

The Dal Lake is a famous lake in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, in India. The lake itself is connected to a number of other lakes of the Kashmir valley. It could be a Residual lake as large variety of rocks is found here.

 

Wular Lake (also spelt Wullar) is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia. It is the source of drinking water for Srinagar .

 

Dhebar Lake (also known as Jaisamand Lake) is Asia's second-largest artificial lake. It is located in the Udaipur District of Rajasthan.

 

Karanji lake is a lake located in the city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka.

 

Kolleru Lake is a large freshwater lake in India's Andhra Pradesh. It is located between the deltas of the Krishna and Godavari rivers.

 

Pulicat Lake in Tamil Nadu is developed from a shallow lagoon and is a salt-water lake.

 

The manmade picturesque Sukhna Lake is in Chandigarh, is at the foothills of Shivalik hills.

 

Chilka Lake (also Chilika Lake) is a brackish water coastal lake in Orissa state, south of the mouth of the Mahanadi River. It is the largest coastal lake in India.

Vembanad is the largest lake in Kerala. The lake lies at sea level, and is separated from the Arabian Sea by a narrow barrier island. Canals link the lake to coastal lakes to the north and south. Several rivers flow into the lake

Ashtamudi Lake is known as gateway to Backwaters of Kerala. It is second largest lake of Kerala.

Panchabhadra Lake is a brackish water lake at Barmer, Rajasthan.

Pichola Lake is the oldest and one of the largest lakes of Udaipur.

Jaisamand Lake is renowned for being the second largest artificial lake in Asia.

Fateh Sagar Lake is the second artificial lake of Udaipur

Rajsamand Lake is one of the five popular lakes of Udaipur.

Udai Sagar Lake is another striking lake that falls under the category of five lakes of Udaipur.

Lakes outside India

 

Lake Baikal in Russia which is estimated to be 25 – 30 million years old. It is the deepest in the world with a bottom at 1,637 m (5,371 ft).

 

Lake Vostok is a subglacial lake in Antarctica.

 

The largest freshwater lake by surface area is Lake Superior in USA.

 

Lake Victoria, also the second largest freshwater lake on Earth It is one of the Great Lakes of Africa.

 

Lake Manasarovar is a fresh-water lake in Tibet.

 

Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, and the only one in the group located entirely within the United States.

 

Balqash  lake, is situated in east-central Kazakhstan.

 

Lake Tanganyika is a large lake in central Africa (3° 20' to 8° 48' South and from 29° 5' to 31° 15' East). It is estimated to be the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, and the second deepest, in both cases after Lake Baikal in Siberia.[2] The lake is divided between four countries – Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania and Zambia.

 

Lake Avernus Lake, southern Italy. It lies west of Naples in the crater of an extinct volcano.

 

Lake Nyasa is the most southerly of the great African Rift Valley lakes.

 

Lake Toba lies in the northern part of Barisan Mountain Range, which is volcanic and traverses Sumatra Island from northwest to southeast.
